Lumo Analytics
Easier insights and stronger data governance
A smooth migration to Databricks Unity Catalog improved performance and visibility into data use and costs
Lumo Analytics is a Finnish front-runner transforming the mining industry with cutting-edge LIBS (Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) technology for fast and precise drill core analysis.
Its solution helps geologists, mining engineers, and metallurgists make faster, data-driven decisions in the field, reducing environmental impact, optimizing costs, and increasing discovery success rates.
Lumo Analytics was ranked seventh on Deloitte’s Technology Fast 50 2025 and was acquired by GeologiclAI, global leader in High-Resolution Decision Engineering for the critical minerals sector, in 2025.
A strategic necessity
As Lumo’s business and data operations expanded over the past few years, managing data securely and efficiently in its Databricks environment became increasingly critical. At the same time, new Databricks releases increasingly focus on Unity Catalog. Unity Catalog is a unified governance solution for data and AI assets on the Databricks platform, and it enables Lumo to take advantage of all the modern features. Hence, the migration was a strategic necessity for Lumo.
To make the migration happen smoothly, Lumo teamed up with its long-term data platform partner, Recordly.
Need for control, speed, and visibility
Lumo wanted to strengthen compliance and security while giving developers and analysts more freedom to work efficiently. The goal was a single, unified platform where data access, governance, and auditing were consistent and where performance and usability improved.
Another major driver for the migration was cost transparency. Previously, Lumo had limited visibility into workload costs. With Unity Catalog’s detailed usage logs and audit features, the team can now see exactly how compute resources are utilized and optimize infrastructure.
With improved data discoverability and visibility to data lineage, working with data became more intuitive. Instead of browsing through external storage, everything is now accessible directly inside Databricks and there are fewer steps, faster access, and smoother workflows.
Why Lumo Analytics chose to work with Recordly
Recordly was chosen as the partner for the migration project because of their deep mutual understanding stemming from a long-standing collaboration. Recordly had already built and maintained Lumo’s IoT and data platform, so the team were familiar with the data environment and the business needs.
That shared history made the project fast and low-risk. Recordly’s expertise in cloud infrastructure, DevOps, and data platforms ensured that the new setup met every requirement for performance, governance, and security.
A migration done right
The migration kicked off with a thorough assessment of the existing Databricks setup – catalogs, tables, permissions, and workloads – to understand the exact scope and required changes. Based on this, Recordly designed a new governance structure for the Unity Catalog metastore, including catalogs, schemas, naming conventions, and a clear Role-Based Access control (RBAC) model.
With the structure defined, the team prepared the necessary storage credentials, external locations, and identity mappings. The metastore was then configured and data objects were migrated. Hive Metastore (a central catalog that stores information about your data) tables were converted, external tables were registered under Unity Catalog with the correct permissions, and all workloads – notebooks, SQL queries, and scheduled jobs – were updated to reference the new catalog paths.
Extensive testing ensured that functionality, performance, and access rights behaved exactly as expected. Once validated, the updated environment was rolled out to teams, complete with documentation, guidance, and the removal of legacy dependencies to guarantee a stable and well-governed platform.
After several weeks of preparation and testing, the production cutover took just two days with no major disruption to daily operations. The full migration was completed in under two months; a result made possible by careful planning and close collaboration.
Recordly streamlined governance, unified access management, and optimized performance under the new Unity Catalog structure. The outcome is a data platform that’s both compliant and flexible; a strong foundation for future innovation.
Creating lasting impact together
The migration brought clear and measurable improvements to Lumo’s data operations.
Performance gains were visible right away; certain read and write operations that previously took around two minutes now complete in about five seconds. According to the team’s observations, overall processing times in some workflows have improved by roughly 40 %, making data pipelines faster and more efficient across the board.
Lumo also gained full visibility into how compute resources are used, allowing the company to allocate costs accurately and optimize infrastructure.
Developers can now safely test new solutions, which shortens development cycles. Analysts and geologists, in turn, benefit from a smoother, more intuitive data experience, even being able to view image files directly in Databricks.
Feedback from both technical teams and leadership has been highly positive. End-users praised the faster performance and easier access to data, while leadership highlighted the transparency and control that Unity Catalog brought to cost management and governance.
Why it mattered to Lumo Analytics
Recordly helped us move to Unity Catalog in a straightforward and low-risk way. We tightened governance, gained full visibility into costs and usage, and improved performance without losing development speed.
